Outlook Express is an e-mail/news group reader. Intrinsically it is also bundled with several versions of Microsoft Windows from Windows 98 to Windows XP. In Windows Vista, Outlook Express is renamed as Windows mail. Again in Windows 7, the outlook express is renamed Windows Live Mail.
Outlook Express is a dissimilar application from Microsoft Office Outlook. The two programs does not share a common codebase. But they do share a common architectural philosophy. The similar names conduce many people to incorrectly conclude that Outlook Express is a stripped-down version of Microsoft Office Outlook.
Outlook Express uses the Windows Address Book to store contact information and integrates with it. On Windows XP, Outlook Express also integrates with Windows Messenger. Outlook Express handles the basics of Internet mail, including an address book, message rules, user-created folders, and support for POP3, IMAP, and HTTP mail accounts. Outlook Express was developed as part of Internet Explorer with the home user in mind.

You can setup mail servers in Outlook Express. The mail servers are POP3 servers, IMAP servers, SMTP servers and HTTP servers. Outlook Express will allow you to override the default behavior and leave a copy of messages on the server. The Add Account wizard try to make it easy to set up the server, provided you know the server type and names.
Outlook Express will block sender’s features based on the sender’s e-mail address. To block a sender, just select the offending message and then click Block Sender on the Message menu. Outlook Express would then ask if you wish to delete all messages from that sender that are in the current folder. Any new message you receive from that sender would be immediately moved to the Deleted Items folder.
